Volunteering at AMTA-WA

My first experience volunteering with anything AMTA related was when I started a local massage therapist networking group. I wanted to get to know the therapists around me, so we could support and inform each other of local and statewide happenings. I got support, training, and ideas from the AMTA-WA chapter leadership of how to make it successful. When I went to the first leadership retreat I attended the chapter board meeting where I learned of statewide rule changes that I had no idea were coming. And I saw just how much work, brain power, and selflessness goes into running our chapter and trying to maintain our status in the healthcare world and try to push us forward and upward.

I knew that I wanted to be involved and stay informed. I felt the camaraderie, experience, and tiredness of our chapter leaders as well as their desire to have more therapists involved, more voices heard, more hands to share the load and take a turn.

I joined the board because if not me, then who? I realized that I can't always leave the leadership roles to others. My feelings of inadequacy don't mean that I'm needed any less. I can serve others around me with my strengths, despite my insecurities. We each have roles to play in the progression of our profession and we can have great influence, as a whole, on our future in healthcare. Part of my role and influence is as an AMTA-WA board member.
